All You Need to Know About Gutter Repair
January 28th, 2015Like everything in our universe, gutter systems are not eternal. They tend to ware off, break and more than frequently clog. Cleaning and taking good maintenance is simply not enough sometimes. But instead of buying and installing brand new gutter installation and throwing away your Christmas savings why not just repair them? Making efforts into fixing something old and faulty may seem useless, but you still do it with your Ford, so why not with your gutters. And the best part – you don’t even have to do it yourself!
As almost every aspect in life, you can always call professional gutter technicians that do it for a living. We can proudly announce that we provide our customers with a new Gutter Repair service. It can be anything from fixing small leaks to reattaching the downpipe or even replacing a section of the gutter. The most frequent reasons you might need repairs on your gutters are:
- Leaking gutters
- Leaking roofs
- Leaking basements
- Rotted wood
- Foundation cracks
- Insect infestation
- Driveway damage
- Drowning landscape
How the repairs are made
The method of course depends on the type of malfunction. The most usual one is leaks from holes. Usually rust wins the battle with the steel/copper gutter or a falling branch or other sharp object pierces it. We’ve even encountered some clients that decided it would be a good idea to make a hole in their gutter so that standing water could drain. Needless to say, don’t do that. Ever. The technique we use is to place a small patch of the same material the gutter is made of over the hole. Then we seal it with silicon or glue and if it’s screamingly different colour than the rest, we paint it. This is guaranteed to hold at least five years.
A different type of malfunction can be gutter sagging. If it’s partially clogged and water stalls instead of drains or if there is a heavy snowstorm the gutters might sag or even completely crash down due to the extra weight. In those cases extra spikes are installed to withstand the heavy load and keep the gutters in their place.
Tools that come in handy
For the standard issues we are prepared with a set number of tools. A tube of sealant and different type of gutter patches are present for any cracks and leaks. A silicon gun and a silicon removal gun are also needed. No need to mention the ladder and the drill, but we also use a measuring tape to be absolutely precise in our work. And lastly, gutter spikes and brackets to prevent the gutters from sagging.
Prevention is always a good idea
There are ways you can minimize the risk of any of the above issues happening. Cleaning the gutters thoroughly every two months is always advised. Also you can install eaves protection boards to keep the wood behind the gutters safe from rotting. The downpipe, as the most prone to clogging element in your gutter system, would sure benefit from a downpipe screen. You can also think of installing gutter guards that will stop larger debris of ever entering your gutters.
Whenever an issue occurs, simply remember to act smart. If you panic and try to remove the issue by yourself without knowing what you’re doing you can further increase the damage. If it is out of your knowledge, always seek professional help. Not only do we give a five year guarantee, but we also insure our work and any damage it might follow.
